Gerard Jones Stage Director
• 1st Prize winner of the European Opera Directing prize 2018
English opera director Gerard Jones emerged from the Young Artists Programme (YAP) at London's Royal Opera House (ROH) after graduating in Music, Italian and German at University College London.
At the ROH he staged his own works, including La Tragedie de Carmen and Handel's Orest at the ROH's Wiltons Music Hall. He also directed YAP summer performances on the main stage of the ROH in 2016 and 2017.
Jones' talent has been recognized beyond the YAP. He was invited by Calixto Bieito to stage Monteverdi's madrigals at the Teatro Arriaga Bilbao, he staged the winning project of Manon Lescaut in the European competition at Staatstheater Mainz, followed by Le nozze di Figaro at Luzerner Theater. His next project will be a new production of the Manon Lescaut commissioned by Poznan Opera in June 2024 with a new creative team.
A seasoned assistant director, Jones has collaborated with renowned directors like Richard Jones, Deborah Warner Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser on productions at prestigious opera houses worldwide, including the Salzburger Festspiele, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real, Hamburg Opera, San Francisco Opera, Tanglewood and the Bolshoi Theatre.
Jones was recognized early on in his career by winning the 1st Prize at the European Opera Directing Competition 2018.
